Help updating from Mac OS X 10.5.8
Nov 24, 2016
I need some help updating my Dad's older MBP from version 10.5.8. It appears that the computer is too old to update to the latest Mac OS so I'm guessing we'll have to purchase one of the the older OS discs I just don't know what is the best way to go about it. The main problem is that he can't update to the current version of Safari with 10.5.8 and many of the web sites you does to no longer support his older version of Safari.
Some pertinent info about the computer is MB990LL/H purchased in July 2009
MacBookPro 5,5, 2GB of memory 2.28 Ghz
What is the best way and OS version to use to get my Dad back up and running again? He only uses it for light web surfing and checking banking/investment accounts.
My uneducated guess is to order a Snow Leopard disk and then upgrade from there, but what OS would be best for this computer?
Thanks for any help

8gb ram is the max and 10.11.x is the highest. you can make it seem faster by replacing the original hard drive with a SSD.
That being said what will it be used for? You can download the software from the app provided you have speedy Internet. You'll have to do the ram upgrade all of this is easy look iFitit and OWC.

It might be more practical to update the machine itself. Probably not what you would like to do, but it may be the best solution. His current Mac has gone well for a long time, and it might just be time for a new one.

If your dad is happy with ordinary browsing and light work, you ought to try 10.6.8 and let us know, how you got on. Snow Leopard may be old but it is a stable OS. Good Luck

Snow Leopard is a good OS, but using it means being stuck with an old version of Safari.
There is Firefox. Versions 48 and greater do not run on Snow Leopard, but there is still an Extended Support Release (45.0, based on Firefox 45) that does. That one's days of getting critical security patches will soon (2017) be coming to an end – but a somewhat out-of-date Firefox may be preferable to a very-out-of-date Safari.
One could also download a Firefox 47 kit from their outdated versions area. Those kits might have some features not in the Extended Support Release.

I have an even older MBP running 10.11, the early 2008 model with 4 GB RAM. It just gets occasional use now, but if you reduce the transparency effect it is not too bad performance wise, certainly useable. However, 2 GB is not enough memory. I would recommend you upgrade the memory to 8 GB, find a 10.6.8 disk and then upgrade it to 10.11. It should be ok until they stop issuing security fixes, maybe 2 or 3 years.

My wife is using a 2009 MBP (the same model as the OP) with 4GB RAM and 10.11. It works great for her web browsing and email. She also uses a 2007 iMac with 2GB RAM on 10.11 and it has no problem keeping up with her light demands.
If the OP's father doesn't do more that what is indicated, and doesn't keep a dozen or more tabs open, even the 2GB might be fine. If a bit sluggish then adding more RAM would be a cheap, simple fix.

Thanks for everyones input. I plan on upgrading to 10.11 after the requires upgrade to 10.8. Then likely an upgrade to 8gb. Is Crutail still a good place to get memory?

I usually get mine from OWC (check if they have some used Apple original trade-ins, you can get smoking deals on them) their brand carries a lifetime advance replacement warranty. Haven't used Crucial, but I'm sure it is fine also.
